Commander In Chief Decision Watch: Day 80

President Obama gave brief interviews to several TV networks on his last day in China.  When asked about a decision on Afghanistan he said…

“We are very close to a decision. I will announce that decision, certainly in the next several weeks.

Several weeks?  Eleven weeks have already passed since Obama received General McChrystal’s exhaustive assessment and strategic plan for success in Afghanistan.

In his report of  August 30, General McChrystal did his best to convey a sense of urgency:

Failure to gain the initiative and reverse insurgent momentum in the near-term (next 12 months) — while Afghan security capacity matures — risks an outcome where defeating the insurgency is no longer possible.

Two of those near-term, twelve months have now been dissipated by the President, who is afraid to decide to commit to the counterinsurgency strategy he announced was his decision back in March.
