Christianity Today Abandons Faith For Leftist Politics.
Mr. Mark Galli, Editor in Chief of the Magazine, Christianity Today authored an editorial, published December 19, titled “Trump Should Be Removed From Office.”
He opens with the declaration that Christianity Today magazine’s mission in its founding documents is to “help evangelical Christians interpret the news in a manner that reflects their faith.” But nowhere in his anti-Trump editorial does he consult the Bible for moral or spiritual guidance in interpreting impeachment news. He doesn’t quote any scriptures that would help Christians assess government leaders.
Mr Galli also fails to consult the Constitution or federal statutes for legal guidance. He says Trump violated the Constitution, but he is unable to cite any specific clause.
Thus, his thoughts about President Trump are not consistent with his opening promise to help evangelical Christians interpret the news in a manner that reflects our faith. His argument is entirely POLITICAL, not Godly, and he simply repeats the case made by Democrats and Trump-haters in the media. It’s not a legal case, and it’s certainly not a spiritual or moral case reflecting our faith.
Accepting Mr. Galli’s case requires one to deny one’s own common sense to interpret an innocuous, casual phone conversation as a diabolical plot to, in Galli’s words “use his political power to coerce a foreign leader to harass and discredit one of the president’s political opponents.” This allegation is simply cut and pasted from Schiff-Nadler boiler plate. Accepting Mr. Galli’s interpretation requires us to join the Democrat-media mob in rejecting any possibility of a legitimate reason to ask Ukraine to cooperate in an investigation of the Bidens or attempted Ukrainian influence over voters in 2016. Accepting Mr. Galli’s interpretation is, in a way, an act of faith. But, it’s faith in the wisdom of Democrats and their media acolytes, rather than in the Word of God.
Obviously, Mr. Trump is a flawed human being, and he does not claim to be a model of Christian virtue. He readily admits to ignorance of the Bible. Some of his conduct as President is offensive to Christian values, such as when he swears on stage at televised events. He does not claim to be qualified for a leadership position in an evangelical Christian church or organization. But we always invite sinners join us in prayer and attend our churches and he has humbly accepted such invitations. In fact these are some of the few instances when I’ve seen him exhibit a trace of humility!
Throughout the Bible there are examples of morally compromised people appointed by God to work for His mission. By our human standards some have done things far worse than anything Trump is accused of doing. David, author of most of the Book of Psalms, committed adultery with a married woman, resulting in pregnancy. He then caused her husband to be killed in battle. But David eventually repented of his sin and God allowed him to become a great king and ancestor to Jesus. God appointed a prostitute, Rahab, to protect two Israelite spies from execution ordered by the King of Jericho. Saul of Tarsus, a government official, ordered the persecution and execution of scores of Christian men and women. But God reached out to him on the road to Damascus and he became Paul the Apostile, spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ and improving the Christian community. Paul authored thirteen books of the New Testament.
Like the flawed but courageous men and women of the Bible, there is more to Donald Trump than his sins. Given that we’re all sinners, and considering God’s history of counter-intuitive appointments, it is not inconsistent with our faith to believe God could be pleased with some of what adds up to Donald Trump.
Christians support Mr. Trump for several reasons. We’ll mention just one in this context, discussion of the CT editorial. He is absolutely committed to restoration of religious liberty, as enumerated in the First Amendment to the US Constitution. The opposition party is made up of a coalition of activist groups who see Christian religious liberty as an opposing force, and through laws, regulations and judicial rulings, seek to diminish it whenever they perceived it to be in conflict with one of their causes. But President Trump’s 188 and counting judicial appointments of Originalist federal court judges and Supreme Court Justices will serve the cause of restoring and preserving religious liberty for decades into the future.
Mr. Galli should have submitted his editorial to CNN or some other secular, left-leaning, political outfit, because there is nothing in it to help Christians interpret impeachment news in a manner that reflects our faith. But then, CNN would likely have turned it away as just one more repetition of the same anti-Trump case they and numerous others have already published hundreds of times since September.
