Weiner-Gate and the Fallacy of Progressivism

The picture was of me and I sent it.

Congressman Anthony Weiner finally confessed.  His Twitter account was not “hacked” as he had been claiming for a week.  And, hoping to head off more damage from additional salacious photos waiting in the wings to be splashed over the Internet, he admitted to several on-line dalliances.  The details and several of the titillating photos are at BigGovernment.com

I usually don’t write about personal scandals.   My goal is for Liberty Works to be known for excellence and we aren’t set up to do an excellent job of monitoring, verifying, and then reporting what usually turns out to be a series of breathless revelations – some true, some not – popping up as “breaking news” every few hours for several days. Other websites are set up for and do an excellent job of sifting out the baseless rumors and reporting the facts.

But now that at least some of the truth has been verified this episode calls for some sober reflection:

  • Congressman Weiner is a strident and combative progressive, who sells his big government ideas by demonizing those of us who want less intrusive, more limited government that obeys the Constitution.
  • The core principle of progressive/liberal politics is unyielding faith in “experts” to reorganize society and the economy, making them perform “better” than millions of large and small businesses, churches, charities, families and 300 million individuals can perform without government supervision.
  • Progressives don’t compete in the open market, and don’t want to be burdened with having to persuade us to participate in or pay for their schemes.  So they don’t start businesses and try to attract voluntary customers.  They don’t start charities and ask for voluntary donations.  They work through government because government operates by the use of force and coercion.

Weiner-Gate should serve as a stark reminder to anyone who is seduced by the progressive concept of “expert” overseers manipulating the lives of the masses for “the greater good” that government officials are, like the rest of us, fallible human beings.  Often, as in the case of Mr. Wiener, they don’t have superior expertise.  They could not run an insurance company or a medical practice or a bank or an oil company or a school more effectively than those who manage those enterprises now.

The ability to use the power of government to force businesses and individuals to do or pay for what they would not do or pay for voluntarily does not make politicians smarter or less fallible than the rest of us.  It simply makes them more dangerous, more likely to cause harm.

Wiener has demonstrated himself especially unfit to be trusted with power over his fellow citizens. He has demonstrated himself to be too stupid or gullible or reckless to realize that:

  • A photo sent out over the Internet will never cease to exist and can be republished without limit;
  • Anyone can, and many do create phony Twitter or Facebook accounts with fictitious names, bios and pictures of attractive young women copied from elsewhere on the net;
  • Participating in tawdry, juvenile on-line interactions make him vulnerable to career ending scandal and even blackmail as a Congressmen with access to classified intelligence and the power to enrich or harm individuals or businesses through legislation.

Weiner says his actions didn’t violate so-called ethics rules of the House and therefore he need not resign.  In his defense he offered the assurance that his Blackberry isn’t government issue, as if it mattered.  He will most likely be “persuaded” to resign by fellow progressives, armed with additional photos.

Anthony Wiener is a beacon of sanity in a Congress under siege by an occupying army of tea party whackos, funded by the wealthy who are unwilling to pay taxes.

Yes he made mistakes in his private life but who hasn’t? I don’t need my Congressmen to be perfect in his private life. That’s not what I’m paying him for.

Wiener has been true to his ideals by calling for reasonable taxation of the rich, for them to pay their fair share to keep our social contract in tact.

    How about a little forgiveness?

No laws were broken, no harm was done, his relationships were consensual. These problems are personal, between the Congressman and his wife.

Time to move on to something that matters, like Republican lies about Medicare.

  3. AzTex on June 7th, 2011

    Breitbart is low life scum.

  4. Navitor on June 7th, 2011

Weiner must go. We have too many disgusting politicians with no moral values at all. Media elites say he was “courageous” to admit his mistakes to the whole world on TV. What a load of bull.

And what about calling them “mistakes?” What does that mean? Did he poke the wrong button on his phone? Did he point the camera at his crotch instead of his face by mistake?

What did he think he was doing when he uploaded those photos to the Internet by “mistake?” What a bozo! Come on Democrats, get rid of him! Is he the only liberal in Queens? Isn’t there someone else who can yell and scream that Republicans are evil without acting like a 14 year old kid?

Heh. I guess Ms Pelosi put the cork back in the swamp before draining all the low life lizards……But I digress.

Its not the reflexive defense by leftists of their miserable cretans that is appalling. I’m used to that; I’ve accepted that they have no standards of behavior whatsoever….except retention of power. What bothers me is the utter lack of any sense of reality.

As we learned at the press conference, this guy was willing to bald faced lie and attempt to besmerch the reputation of people who were telling the truth……for his own political gain. That’s a miserable person.

We now know he lied about the fact that he supposedly did not ask anyone to lie. He did. That’s a miserable person.

He – and apparently his, um, “interesting” supporters here think it acceptable to publish on the internet pictures of his genitals to people of an uncertain age. One person’s, ahem, “mistakes,” as Temerity put it, are another’s reckless, bordering on insane, actions.

This guy is a compulsive and dangerous liar. He’s willing to look straight into the camera and lie, and to attempt to destroy others to cover up his own despicable behavior. Sort of reminds me of (squint eyes and wag fingers with me now) “I did not have sex with that woman, Ms Lewinsky..”

What we know about the left is that they have no morals, will lie until the evidence forces them to come clean……….and then their equally morally bankrupt zombies will come forth to defend……………all for political gain.

    Simply miserable human beings.

This post is dishonest. He tries to draw a connection between PERSONAL, private behavior that is really nobody’s business and the progressive movement that has changed the face of America for the better. What’s really happening is the recession demonstrates that unfettered free markets, tax giveaways to the rich, and the religious right have destroyed the hard won gains the progressive movement.

There are plenty of liars and perverts on GOP side of the isle. If Wiener proves something bad about all progressives then what do Foley, Vitter, Gingrich, Ensign, et all prove about Conservatives?

  7. Drew on June 8th, 2011

AxTex, and his fellow “progressives,” advocacy and acceptance of politicians as internet perverts, bald faced liars, and – for personal political gain – would be destroyers of those who actually speak the truth is duly noted.

BTW – Did you enjoy inspecting his weener? Did you turn down the lights? Ask people to leave the room for a few minutes?

  8. AzTex on June 8th, 2011

I get no personal gain. But Breitbart, who manufactured this scandal to distract the public from Conservative stonewalling is paid by the corporate interests. Breitbart is the destroyer of those who speak the truth!

Weiner called out the dangerous, radical tea party whackos in Congress and showed the voters what they are.

Anthony Weiner has been one of the few who speak truth to power and now the Right wing is trying to destroy him.

What about Republican perverts? Are you OK with Vitter, Gingrich, Foley, Ensign, Chris Lee, Larry Craig?

  9. Arm Chair Jane on June 8th, 2011

Had discussion with some GOP Parents who were upset about the Weiner incident. I asked them about Vitter and Ensign but they HAD NO IDEA WHAT I was talking about!

  10. Drew on June 9th, 2011

“But Breitbart, who manufactured this scandal…”

Fascinating. So Breitbart held a gun to Weiner’s head and forced him to send out pictures of his erect unit on the internet. I must confess, I didn’t know that.

“What about Republican perverts? Are you OK with Vitter, Gingrich, Foley, Ensign, Chris Lee, Larry Craig?”

They get called out, and asked to resign, or go low.

You, apparently, put on knee pads when when leftists get caught. AzTex, do you spit, or swallow?

  11. AzTex on June 10th, 2011

Alex Baldwin wrote an insightful description of Weiner at Huffington. Weiner is a modern human being, a high functioning man who is busy all the time serving his nation and his district.

Breitbart is a low functioning man who profits from selling lies and trumped up scandals. He’s a tool of the rich who are trying to block progress toward a more equitable society.

A new poll shows Congressman Weiner’s constituents don’t want him to resign. That’s because he’s on our side, not the side of the plutocrats.

After two weeks of trying to destroy an brave voice in Congress the score is zero for Boomerjeff (why doesn’t he use his real name?) and Navitor and Drew and all those tea party idiots, to ONE for Weiner and all the working families who ares still struggling in this Bush depression.

  12. Common Patriot on June 10th, 2011

Weiner’s Democratic colleagues want him gone. It’s only a matter of time. Good riddance.

Weiner is part of the liberal machine that has bankrupted this country and refuses to cut any spending on anything… except military defense, of course. They want us to be weak like their soul brothers and sisters in Europe.

We don’t need any more sleazy politicians representing us.

  13. TeaPartyCA on June 10th, 2011

    AzTex –

Who gives a big F what Alec (it’s Alec – not Alex, moron) Baldwin thinks? Of course he he makes excuses for another member of the national perverts club!

Write congress and demand that the House expel Weiner. This sickening e-peep show has gone on long enough!

  14. OwenB on June 10th, 2011

Now the media is taking attention away from Weiner by trying to make Sarah Palin’s emails into a made-up scandal.
