Obama’s Stimulus: Hype VS Results

Obama Job Losses

In the campaign to pass the stimulus the Administration conducted a full throttle media blitz claiming it was too urgent to allow time for normal Congressional hearings, deliberation or debate.  The final vote came before any member could read the thousand page legislation, when the only copy still had hundreds of hand written corrections, cross-outs and margin notes.

What did Obama and the media say was so on-fire urgent about this bill, authorizing government to borrow and spend an additional $787 Billion, on top of the regular federal budget?

“Saving JOBS!”

The Administration and the media hectored us continuously with urgent warnings that there would be millions more layoffs if Congress didn’t act immediately, without stopping to think.

President Obama said…

A failure to act, and act now, will turn crisis into a catastrophe and guarantee a longer recession, a less robust recovery, and a more uncertain future. Millions more jobs will be lost.

David Obey, Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee said, in response to Conservative objections:

Another week that we delay is another 100,000 more people unemployed.  I don’t think we want that on our consciences.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, arguably the second most powerful Democrat, behind President Obama, told Fox News:

We were — we will lose half a million jobs a month the longer we go without a package.

These comments were deliberate attempts to deceive the more naive among us into believing that passing this legislation would bring about immediate results.   What else was Obey trying to cause us to believe except that next week’s layoffs would not occur if only Congress acted this week, without any deliberation.  Pelosi wanted us to believe that a lot fewer than half a million jobs per month would be lost, beginning immediately.

Today, the Dept. of Labor published its jobs report for February.   As the chart shows, job losses accelerated during the two weeks following passage of the obama stimulus

Some might say its just too soon to see any results.  But Obama and the Democrats held out immediate results as the justification for instant Congressional action.  Obama and the Democrats and their media cheer leaders emphatically set the standard by which results should be measured.

Liberty Works will continue to keep track of job losses as the long months of  recession drag on, made more severe by massive government borrowing and spending.

Take a break for a few days! Cut down on that caffeine. We can’t get out of the Bush depression in two weeks. Bush got us into the worst crisis in a century. President Obama and his crew know what their doing. In a couple of months it will start getting better. The Republicans are a dead party that will never be relevant again.
