Update: The State Department has just disclosed that the passport applications of both Hillary Clinton and John McCain have also been accessed by unauthorized contract employees.
The Obama campaign, anxious to divert attention from the Senator’s bombastic Pastor, is making the most of what appears to be a minor incident. It seems that the government contracts out the passport application and approval process. Three people who work for the contractor apparently accessed Obama’s passport application from a data network. Two of the three have been fired and the third has been “disciplined,” whatever that means.
The Obama campaign has issued an hysterical reaction, characterizing the accessing as “an outrageous breach of security and privacy, even from an Administration that has shown little regard for either over the last eight years.”
So far, nobody has discovered a connection between the contract employees and any nefarious political conspiracy. No reasonable person would believe the President or anyone representing “the Administration” conspired with employees of the contractor to see which boxes Obama checked on his passport application.
In the real world this would be a yawner. In the hyper-touchy, quick-tempered realm of Presidential politics it becomes an opportunity for the candidate to play the role of aggrieved victim in order to “change the subject.”
